Dublin featherweight boxer Bernard Dunne continued the perfect start to his fledgling career with a first round stoppage against American Simon Ramirez at the Wild West Casino in Oklahoma in the early hours of this morning.
Dunne, who is promoted by the legendary Sugar Ray Leonard, stormed out after the opening bell with Ramirez unable to cope with the Dubliner's quick hands. Dunne's telling combination was a double left hook to the body followed by another to the head, which sent his opponent to the canvas after just 69 seconds.
The New York State Athletic Commission only cleared the Los Angeles-based Irishman to fight two weeks ago after a query over a brain scan earlier in the year prevented Dunne from fighting on that occasion.
The 22-year-old's manager, Brian Peters, has already set up the former Irish Champion for another bout on February 7th in Albuquerque and another a month later in Montreal.
"Bernard needs to keep busy. That's the only way he will improve." said Peters after Dunne's third straight win. "He lost the momentum that he had after his first two wins but regular fights will get that back."
Meanwhile, coach John Breen has brought in Darren Melville to spar with a possible future opponent for Dunne, Belfast man Kevin O'Hara, as he counts down to his second pro fight on February 1st at the Odyssey Arena.
