Body of Canadian shipwreck diver found off Donegal coast

Man became separated from colleagues while exploring World War II wreck

The body of a diver who disappeared on a shipwreck off Co Donegal has been found.

The remains of the 60-year-old Canadian national was discovered by divers some 30km north of Fanad Head lighthouse after 7pm.

The man, a technical diver, had been diving on shipwrecks on Saturday afternoon when he became separated from his diving colleagues.

Lough Swilly Lifeboat public relations officer Joe Joyce said they were relieved that the man’s body had been recovered.

“It is little comfort for the man’s family but at least it gives them some kind of closure that he has been found,” he said.

The man went missing while exploring the second World War wreck the MV Pinto.

The man got separated from his group amidst heavy rolling swells of up to 5m after setting out on a chartered boat from Downings in Sheephaven Bay.

The man’s family in Ottawa have been informed that his remains have now been found.
