Tonga 19 Ireland 40
Ireland rebounded from last week's loss to world champions Australia to thrash Tonga 40-19 in the early hours of today.
The Irish outscored the Pacific Islanders six tries to two with Guy Easterby and John Kelly crossing twice each while Mark McHugh and Jonathan Bell picked up one apiece.
Fly-half Ronan O'Gara booted two conversions and two penalties.
The Tongans were also missing most of their European-based players but put up a respectable effort with Pierre Hola scoring all of their points from two tries and three penalties.
Tonga led 11-0 early in the first half when Hola scored his first try but Ireland ran away with the match in the second half when Viliami Ma'asi was sent- off for stamping on the head of Irish number eight Eric Miller.
O'Gara opened Ireland's account with two penalties before late tries by scrum-half Easterby and wing Kelly gave the Irish a 20-14 half-time lead.
Kelly and Easterby both grabbed their second tries shortly after the re-start to seize control of the match before the Tongans threatened to mount a comeback when Hola ran the length of the pitch after an intercept.
Ireland however regained control with McHugh and Bell scoring late tries to secure the win.
Ireland play Samoa in Apia next week to end their short southern hemisphere tour.
