Iraq has demanded the lifting of the embargo slapped on it for invading Kuwait in 1990 after the latest disarmament reports to the Security Council by UN chief weapons inspectors, Iraqi television said today.
"The embargo must be completely lifted now the world realises the designs of America and Iraq's implementation of UN resolutions despite their unfairness," an official spokesman said on Youth TV.
Youth TV, run by President Saddam Hussein's elder son, Uday, said the spokesman was speaking after a meeting of Saddam with Parliamentary Speaker Saadun Hammadi and officials from the Revolution Command Council and the national and regional leaderships of the ruling Baath party.
"The proof that we have progressed has been given by those charged with (checking) our implementation of UN resolutions, notably the bodies run by Hans Blix and Mohamed ElBaradei," the spokesman said.
"The Security Council must clearly refute the lies of the US and British administrations and their accomplices on Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction," the Iraqi spokesman said.
