Iranian Ambassador returns to London despite tensions

Iran's ambassador to Britain has returned to his post following a row over the British arrest of a former Iranian diplomat.

Ambassador Morteza Sarmadi was recalled to Iran last week amid tensions over the arrest, at Argentina's request, of former Iranian envoy Mr Hadi Soleimanpour in connection with the 1994 bombing of a Jewish center in Buenos Aires that killed 85.

Iran has said the case is politically motivated and that Mr Soleimanpour, who was envoy in Buenos Aires at the time of the bombing, has protested his innocence.

Britain has dismissed the charge, saying its courts are independent.

The tense atmosphere became further charged when shots were fired at the British embassy building in Tehran on Wednesday. No one was hurt. Iran called the shooting an "irresponsible act" and said it was investigating.

Iran has called for the swift release of Mr Soleimanpour and warned of "strong action." It has already cut economic and cultural ties with Argentina.

Analysts say Iran may be wary of downgrading ties with Britain in case it prompts a response from other European Union states at a time when the country is already under mounting pressure to allow tougher inspections of its nuclear program.
