Iranian President Mohammad Khatami swept to a landslide reelection today, boosting his mandate to push through his liberal reforms in the face of hardline resistance.

Mr Mohammad Khatami was elected president with a strong majority of your votes, state television said.

With 24.1 million votes counted, Mr Khatami had won 18.6 million, with conservative Mr Ahamad Tavakoli trailing far behind. Final results would not be in before late tonight or early on Sunday and vote counting continued.

The television did not give the total number of votes cast.

But an Interior Ministry source told the official IRNA news agency that Mr Khatami had won more than 21 votes of the total 28 million ballots cast.
