Gardai in Limerick have launched an investigation following the discovery of an infant's body in a house in the city this afternoon.

The body of a seven-month-old girl was found in a house in the Ballynanty area of the city at lunchtime today.

The State pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy is to carry out a post mortem on the infant's body in the Mid Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle tomorrow.

The house where the baby was found is being preserved for forensic examinations and gardai at Mayorstone in Limerick are investigating.
