A complaint relating to the illegal dumping of asbestos in Co Wexford is being investigated.
Wexford County Council received a report of waste being illegally dumped at an area known as Monacahee, Ramsgrange, early last week.
An environment officer with the council went to investigate and it was found that an estimated 100 tonnes of asbestos material were dumped at the site.
A council spokesperson said most of the material at the site was "stored in polythene wraps and bagged".
"The site contains asbestos sprayed coatings, asbestos insulation board, asbestos cement sheeting and a large quantity of rubble, which may have asbestos mixed through it," added the spokesperson.
Gardaí were called in to investigate and contact was made with the reputed landowner.
The council also employed the services of a specialist asbestos monitoring company to carry out an assessment of the site.
A spokesman for Dublin-based Occupational Hygiene & Safety Services Ltd said he could not comment on whether the company was involved. However, he said the company was employed to carry out work in Co Wexford on behalf of the local authority.
Air testing has been carried out at four different locations on the site this week and the council spokesperson said the preliminary results indicated the air was "safe and without risk from asbestos fibres".
A preliminary health and safety plan has been prepared for the removal, and the clean-up operation - which is expected to take four weeks to complete - is scheduled to begin immediately.
The Health and Safety Authority said it is confident its "emergency plan will ensure that the public are not put at risk".
