THE organisers of a US database which named an Irishman, among a number of alleged child abusers have told The Irish Times that the service was intended to name convicted paedophiles only.

In an e-mailed reply to queries, the Tennessee based office said that, if charges against the Irishman had been "dropped", his name would have been removed from the database, which was "only for convicted child molesters".

The Internet site had included details of the abuse by the named man of an Irish teenage boy who has since moved to the US. The allegations had been investigated by the RUC, but the Director of Public Prosecutions in Northern Ireland decided earlier this year not to prosecute.

The database appears to have become unavailable, at least temporarily.

The man who submitted details of the alleged abuse to the database believes the organisers may be taking legal advice on the continuation of the service.
