British pollution watchdog the Environment Agency today began a bid to help UK small firms keep on the right side of the law.

The ground-breaking partnership project to develop the Internet tool NetRegs is a European first.

It will give sector-specific guidelines in plain English to help small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) comply with environmental legislation.

Users will be kept up to date with policy developments with regular e-mail alerts.

With eventual coverage of 100 business sectors, NetRegs will cover most of the UK business community and will also represent differences in law for Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.

NetRegs project manager Mr Richard Martin said: "Today's launch marks the beginning of an exciting opportunity to develop NetRegs into a tool that will make life easier for small businesses, or indeed, any sized business".
