Insurers are withdrawing cover for travel to countries hit by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), the Guardianhas reported.

American Express said in London it would not sell insurance to destinations the government has warned travellers to avoid, which includes Canada, Hong Kong and China.

The report also quoted insurer Direct Line as saying its policies would not cover tourists for SARS.

The paper said Columbus Travel had withdrawn cover for China, the country worst hit by SARS and might change its policies for Canada.

The disease is spread by a virus, has a mortality rate of about 6 per cent and has killed more than 250 people worldwide out of 4,650 infections reported in recent weeks.
