An investigation is underway into the cause of a house fire in Cork city yesterday in which a 28-year-old man died.
The body of the man was found in the living room of the house on the Kerry Road in the Mayfield area of the city. It is believed the fire may have been burning for several hours before it was spotted. The house was extensively damaged by smoke.
Emergency services were called to the semi-detached house at around 6am after a neighbour raised the alarm. A garda spokesman said: "The man was taken to the South Infirmary Hospital in Cork where he was pronounced dead."
The neighbour, who alerted the fire brigade, also tried to enter the house without success and was later treated for an eye injury. Gardai confirmed the deceased was the only occupant of the house.
