Inquests into stabbing and gun deaths adjourned

GARDA INQUIRIES are continuing into the death of a woman found stabbed to death in the Phoenix Park last year. Eugenia Bratis (50), from Timisoara in Romania, was found in a wooded area off Military Road, Phoenix Park, on August 5th, 2009.

A postmortem by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis found Ms Bratis, who had a husband and two adult children in Romania and who was living rough in Dublin, died of multiple stab wounds.

Det Insp Colm Fox of Blanchardstown Garda station told an inquest at the Dublin City Coroner’s Court yesterday that the investigation into Ms Bratis’s death was ongoing. He applied for an adjournment of the inquest.

Coroner Dr Brian Farrell adjourned until October.

Due to ongoing Garda investigations, he also adjourned inquests into the death of two men killed in a double homicide as they sat in a sports car in Dublin’s inner city.

Michael Cronin (35), Hampton Wood Green, Finglas, a drug trafficker, and James Maloney (26), Braithwaite Street, were shot in a car in Summerhill on January 7th, 2009 by a man who was sitting in the back seat. Mr Cronin was brought to the Mater Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Mr Maloney died two days later in St James’s Hospital.

A postmortem by Dr Curtis found that Mr Cronin died of a gunshot wound to the head, and a post-mortem by State Pathologist Prof Marie Cassidy found that Mr Maloney also died of a gunshot wound to the head.

A fourth inquest, into the death of Shay Bradley, was also adjourned due to ongoing investigations.

Mr Bradley (27), North King Street, was discovered in a car near Blackhorse Avenue on March 10th, 2006.

Mr Bradley, who was originally from Derry, died of gunshot wounds.
