The inquest into the death of a 14-year-old Cavan schoolgirl whose body was found in a garden opens today.

Jamie Maughan's body was discovered lying in the back garden of a house in Cavan on July 2nd, 2004. It is believed it had been there for up to five days.

In July of last year, a 23-year-old Brazilian man was sentenced to two years imprisonment for the schoolgirl's statutory rape on June 26th, 2004.

As Weldo Cavalcante, with an address at Kilinkare, Cavan, had spent time on remand he only had months left to serve in prison at the time of the sentencing.

Jamie's family are expected to raise a variety of issues at the inquest in Cavan Court house today including the length of time it took to discover the girl's body.
