A CORONER in England will open an inquest on Monday into the death of Cork child Oisín Twomey.
The 18-month-old toddler was killed in a car crash that claimed the life of his unborn sister, Elber Marie, in Torquay, Devon, on Friday, July 6th.
The boy’s parents, Con (39) and Elber Twomey (36) remain in critical condition in Derriford hospital, where family members are maintaining a vigil and have called for prayers for their recovery.
Police in Devon said the inquest is due to take place in Plymouth on Monday.
Proceedings will include the death of a third life lost in the crash, Polish taxi driver Marek Wojciechowski (26).
The UK Independent Police Complaints Commission is conducting a separate investigation into the crash to establish whether Mr Wojciechowski was being pursued by police at the time.
Devon police said the car was not being pursued, although they were looking for Mr Wojciechowski after a friend contacted them amid concerns for his well-being. Mr Wojciechowski was married and living in Torquay with his wife and two daughters. In a tribute to her husband, Agnieszka Wojciechowski said the family had been left in a tragic situation and her husband was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the high-speed crash took place.
Her words, written on a Polish news website, were translated by the local Herald Express.
“The man I love with all my heart is no longer here. He left me and our two young children. I will never be able to tell him how much I love him and he will never say these words to me again.
“He wasn’t drunk or under the influence of drugs,” she reportedly stated, asking web users not to comment on the horrific crash if they did not know the full story.
