A GROUP of young people from inner-city communities in Dublin and Belfast were yesterday honoured for their contribution to a novel, technology-focused environmental project.
The youths carried out a series of environmental challenges over the course of a week, including the cleaning of a beach at Clogherhead in Co Louth and visits to shops in the Liberties to assess their commitment to recycling.
The challenges were part of the iTrek initiative, which aims to promote environmental awareness through use of digital technology.
Speaking at an awards ceremony for the participants yesterday, Philip Flynn, chief executive of the Digital Hub Development Agency, said iTrek built on young people's enthusiasm for technology to increase their interest in environmental issues.
