A young Co Meath man who suffered serious pelvic injuries and whose right leg was "mangled" when knocked off a motorcycle more than four years ago was awarded £799,281 in damages at the High Court yesterday.
The court heard Mr Brian Wallace (20), of Griffin Park, Trim, Co Meath, suffers from constant pain as a result of his injuries and may have to have his leg amputated. Mr Wallace was a pillion passenger on a motorcycle which was struck by a vehicle owned by Mr Nigel Behan, of River Forest, Leixlip, Co Kildare, on the Summerhill to Trim road on December 10th 1995. Liability was not disputed and the issue before the court was assessment of damages.
Mr Justice Smith heard Mr Wallace required 36 blood replacement units and was taken to the operating theatre on 30 occasions after the accident.
He suffered compound fractures to his pelvis, right femur, tibia and fibula.
