American Lindsay Davenport withdrew from Wimbledon today with an injured right knee.
The 1999 champion is still nursing her knee after surgery in January. She missed the French and Australian Opens and has slid from first to sixth in the WTA rankings.
"I am extremely disappointed not to be able to play on the grass at Wimbledon this year," Davenport said. "I really hoped that I could make it back from my surgery earlier than expected and be able to play at Wimbledon but it is not possible yet."
Martina Hingis of Switzerland and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain have also pulled out of the tournament.
