A young professional actor, who was injured when knocked off her bicycle by a bus, went on stage in the lead role minutes after leaving hospital, a court heard yesterday.

The Circuit Court president, Mr Justice Smyth, complimented Ms Roisin Kearney (25) for her bravery.

"Although still limping and heavily bandaged she nevertheless followed the great tradition of the stage that the show must go on, and it did," he said.

Mr Mark de Blacam, counsel for Ms Kearney, of Les Bas Terrace, Rathmines, Dublin, told the court that while she had not suffered very serious physical injuries, she had developed post-traumatic stress symptoms which had affected her work and love of cycling.

She told the court she was cycling to the City Arts Centre in Dublin to perform the lead role in Along Came a Spider when she was "boxed in" by the bus, which crushed her bicycle. After treatment for arm and hip injuries she had been rushed by car to the theatre.

Liability was conceded by Dublin Bus. In assessing damages at £10,500, Mr Justice Smyth said that although she suffered some loss of confidence she had shown a determination to get on with her career.
