Indonesian President Abdurrahman Wahid today warned he would take firm action after MPs moved closer to impeaching him, appearing to keep alive his threat to declare a state of emergency to stay in power.
In a speech delivered during a ceremony at the palace, Mr Wahid reiterated he would not resign despite growing calls for him to step down to prevent the country's political crisis from exploding into violence.
"I don't care what it is, I will take firm action if the country is in danger. I will not resign," Mr Wahid said.
Faction leaders of the supreme legislature decided yesterday to convene on August 1st to consider impeaching the Muslim cleric over two graft scandals and a chaotic 19-months in office.
