Police in the Indian capital said today they had arrested two suspected members of a Pakistan-based Kashmir guerrilla group and seized some eight kilogrammes of explosives.
The two suspected Harkat-ul-Mujahideen rebels were caught late yesterday when one of them was passing on two kilogrammes of explosives to the other outside a cinema hall in a smart New Delhi neighbourhood.
Police said one of two also had a grenade, two explosive detonators and a mobile phone. A search at his home uncovered six kilogrammes of explosives, police said.
They are both Pakistani nationals and were planning to set off explosions in the city, a senior New Delhi police official said.
The Harkat-ul-Mujahideen is one of some dozen guerrilla groups fighting Indian rule in the insurgency-racked northern Kashmir since late 1989. New Delhi has been a favourite target of these rebel groups in the past.
