India has test fired a surface-to-air missile hours after Pakistan tested a medium-range ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuclear warhead deep into Indian territory.

The missile test was "successful" and was conducted at midday (Irish time) from a remote testing range on the country's east coast.

"It was a routine test. User trials have been taking place," a defence ministry spokesman said.

Islamabad earlier today announced it had test fired a home-grown missile, with a range of up to 800 kilometres.

Today's tests come amid a resurgence in tensions between the neighbours over a spate of killings blamed on Pakistani-based militants during elections in the Indian-run half of Kashmir.

The United States said it was "disappointed" at the missile tests.

"We are disappointed at ballistic missile tests occurring in the region," said State Department spokesman Mr Richard Boucher.
