Sheridan faces perjury allegations
GLASGOW- The family home of former socialist MSP Tommy Sheridan was searched last night as police questioned him in connection with perjury allegations.
Nine officers from Lothian and Borders police detained the politician's wife, Gail, at the house in the Cardonald area of Glasgow while they carried out a search of the property, it was confirmed by his lawyer.
Mr Sheridan, who left the Scottish Socialists to set up his own party, Solidarity, was awarded £200,000 (€280,000) damages following a defamation case against the News of the Worldnewspaper last year.

Priest stabbed in Turkish church
ANKARA- An Italian Catholic priest was stabbed yesterday at his church in the western Turkish city of Izmir, Turkish television said, in an incident that recalled the fatal shooting of another Italian priest in Turkey in 2006.
The priest, identified as Adriano Franchini, was taken to hospital, the reports said. It was not immediately clear how serious the priest's injuries were.

Bush foreign policy in 'free fall'
BERLIN- President Bush's foreign policy is in "free fall" and puts the nation's security at risk, former ambassador to the United Nations John Bolton told a German magazine yesterday.
Mr Bolton, who was a leading hawk in the US administration and favoured a tough stance against Iran, North Korea and Iraq, told the Der Spiegelweekly that President Bush needed to rein in Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.

Seven killed as bus hits landmine
GUWAHATI- Seven civilians, including five women, were killed when the bus in which they were travelling hit a landmine in northeast India's Manipur state yesterday, police said.
The blast took place near a military camp at Lamlai, about 15km (10 miles) east of the state capital, Imphal. More than two dozen people were wounded in the explosion, and many were in a critical condition.

Police arrest 63 in child porn inquiry
MADRID- Spanish police yesterday arrested 63 people in five investigations into child pornography being posted, viewed and paid for on the internet.
It is the second huge swoop this year after police arrested 66 people on charges of child pornography in July.

AL-IRQAH- Aid group Médecins Sans Frontières yesterday said it discovered the bodies of 56 men, women and children on Yemen's southern coast who perished trying to emigrate illegally from Africa.
