Three held over death of Antrim man

Police have detained three men in connection with the murder of an Antrim man.

The body of Martin Morgan (41) was discovered at his home in Antrim town on Saturday.

In Limavady, Co Derry, early on Friday, the body of Michael McGinnis (38) was found near his home at 2am at the bottom of steps on Alexander Road.

Police said yesterday they were mounting a murder inquiry after a postmortem showed he had been killed. One man has been detained for questioning.

Motorcyclist dies in Cork crash

Gardaí in Clonakilty, Co Cork are appealing for witnesses to a single-vehicle crash at Dunmanway, Co Cork, yesterday afternoon when a male motorcyclist was killed after he struck a ditch on the Bandon side of Dunmanway on the main Cork-Bantry Road.

Man charged over van hijack

A man has been charged in relation to a hijacking in Co Offaly on Saturday during which a garda was hit by a delivery van as the owner was locked in the back of the vehicle.

Christopher Joyce (22), Gartan, Manchester, was arrested in Spollenstown, Tullamore, yesterday and charged at Tullamore District Court with dangerous driving and unauthorised taking of the delivery truck.

The driver of the van was delivering car parts when he was locked into the back and the vehicle driven away. As the van was driven towards a Garda checkpoint, it hit the garda on duty, dragging him for half a mile. The stolen truck passed through a second checkpoint and crashed. The man driving the vehicle ran away.

The injured garda was taken to Tullamore General Hospital where he was said not to be serious. The van owner was unharmed.

Government aid for Armagh centre

The Centre of Cross Border Studies in Armagh has been awarded almost €1.5 million by Government agency Irish Aid. It is the first Northern third-level institution to receive direct funding from the taxpayer in the Republic.

The funding by Irish Aid, the Government's development co-operation agency, will enable the centre to lead an all-Ireland consortium of universities to help increase the research capacity of universities in Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique and Malawi.

"This funding will enable Irish universities and colleges to build partnerships with universities in developing countries," said Minister for Overseas Development Michael Kitt.

Funeral of Galway air crash victim

Tributes were paid yesterday to the two men who died in last week's plane crash in Connemara. At the funeral of accountant Paul McNamee in Loughrea, Co Galway, Fr Cathal Geraghty, described the news of the crash as "unspeakable".

Mr McNamee was mourned yesterday by his wife, Kitty, son Vincent and daughter Gillian, and prayers were said for the recovery of his colleagues. Prayers were also said for the pilot, Matt Masterson, who is survived by his partner and four children.

School debaters win in Seoul

The debaters of Team Ireland had a unanimous win over Australia in South Korea yesterday when they successfully opposed the motion, "That this House would Limit Media Reporting on Terrorist Atrocities".

Eoghan McSwiney, Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh, Cork, Sian Murray, Newpark Comprehensive, Hugh Burns, Pobalscoil Neasain, Conor McAndrew, Gonzaga College, and Patrick Moloney, St Conleth's, were in the final preliminary round of this year's World Schools Debating Championships in Seoul.
