Baby dies in Antrim house fire

A baby has died in a house fire in Antrim. The blaze broke out at a house on Orkney Street at about 7pm on Saturday.

"A 10-month-old girl was found deceased at the scene," a police spokesman said.

A five-year-old boy who was also in the house was taken to hospital and is believed to be suffering from the effects of smoke inhalation.

A woman, a toddler and a 10-year-old girl escaped unhurt. A man was later treated at the scene for the effects of smoke inhalation.

Woman held over fatal stabbing

Police have arrested a woman (25) in connection with the stabbing to death of a Belfast man. No motive has been established for the attack, which left Kevin Doyle (30) with a fatal wound.

Shooting incident in Cork city

A man in his 30s was being treated at Cork University Hospital last night following a shooting incident in the Knocknaheeny area of the city.

The man was in a house in the Kilmore Road area of Knocknaheeny when shots were fired at around 9.30pm.

Grants for US support groups

Irish immigration organisations in the US are to receive grants totalling €1.03 million ($1.5 million), according to Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin.

The grants will go to 16 organisations that provide support and advisory services to Irish emigrants. This brings the total funding to such groups in the US to €2.1 million this year.

School campaign gets under way

A campaign to help address a severe shortage in primary school places in south Dublin is to be launched tonight. The population of Sandyford/ Glencullen has risen by over 35 per cent in the last six years, but there are still only six primary schools.

A search of the river Corrib was under way in Galway last night, following reports that a man went missing in the Dangan area.

Armed robbery in Arklow

Armed robbers got away with an undisclosed sum of money from the Tesco petrol station in Arklow last night.

The men, wearing balaclavas, entered the petrol filling station around 9.20pm. One was armed with a knife and the other had an axe.
