US committee approves India nuclear deal
WASHINGTON -A US Senate panel voted yesterday to approve the US-India civil nuclear cooperation agreement without a controversial proposal to give Congress more influence over future deals.
The Senate foreign relations committee voted 19-2 in favour of the deal, which would end the three-decade ban on US nuclear trade with India and is viewed by US president George Bush as the cornerstone of a new strategic partnership with New Delhi. - (Reuters)
French baby milk withdrawn
PARIS -A French company said yesterday it had ordered the withdrawal of a batch of powdered baby milk sold exclusively in pharmacies after traces of salmonella were found in eight babies.
Stressing that there was no link to a milk scandal gripping China, Novalac said it had taken the precautionary step on suspicion that salmonella was present in boxes of AR Digest with the expiry date June 18th, 2011.
Traces of salmonella had been observed in the faeces of eight babies and Novalac had been alerted to the problem on Monday. - (Reuters)
Livni reassurance on peace talks
RAMALLAH -Chief Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qurie won an assurance from Israeli prime minister- designate Tzipi Livni yesterday that peace talks will not stall while she tries to form a new coalition government.
Mr Qurie warned that violence could erupt if the talks collapsed. "The Palestinians will continue to negotiate. But, if the talks reached a dead end, what do we do? Capitulate? Resistance in all its forms is a legitimate right," Mr Qurie said. - (Reuters)
Skydiver falls through roof
BERLIN -A German skydiver whose parachute failed to open has plunged to his death through the roof of an apartment building in the southwestern town of Ludwigsburg.
He left a hole in the roof and crashed into a bedroom below, but missed the occupant, who was in another room. - (Reuters)
