Cork gets worst of heavy rainfall
Cork motorists faced delays due to heavy flooding on many city and county roads yesterday morning after heavy rainfall overnight. While traffic was largely back to normal by the afternoon, motorists were advised to drive carefully because of surface water.
Cork bore the brunt of Monday night's bad weather with more than 1½ inches of rainfall recorded at Cork airport between midnight and 9am yesterday.
Roads affected included the Curragh Road, the Rochestown Road towards Passage West and the Sarsfield Road. Many county roads from Bandon to Carrigtohill and Kinsale were also flooded. Kinsale was the worst-hit area, according to AA Roadwatch.
Toiréasa Ferris on town council
Sinn Féin county councillor Toiréasa Ferris has been co-opted on to Tralee Town Council. She replaces Maisie Houlihan who retired due to ill health.
A former mayor of Kerry and a daughter of Kerry North Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris, Ms Ferris is one of two Sinn Féin councillors on the town council. She is expected to contest the European elections for Sinn Féin.
Streets daubed in Galway
Gardaí in Galway are looking for vandals with an artistic touch after large footprints were daubed on four streets in the city. Three people have been captured on CCTV painting the footprints and cave drawings early on Monday.
Gardaí say considerable damage has been caused to the street surfaces, two of which are paved with expensive stone.
The drawings were on Shop Street, High Street, Bridge Street and Dominick Street.
