Gardaí arrest knife attack suspect
A man was questioned by gardaí last night about the stabbing of a woman at a house in Greystones, Co Wicklow.
The 51-year-old victim was wounded in the chest and abdomen during the assault in a property at the Charlesland Park estate.
A 22-year-old man was arrested in the area. The attack occurred at 8.25pm on Monday.
The suspect was taken to Bray Garda station. He was later released and a file has been sent to the DPP.
Garda sources said the arrested man had been undergoing medical treatment before the stabbing took place. The victim underwent surgery at St Vincent's Hospital, Elm Park, Dublin. Her injuries are not life threatening.
Pedestrian (82) dies in Dublin
An 82-year-old pedestrian was killed when she was struck by a car reversing out of a driveway on Monday at about 10.50pm in Dublin.
The 82-year-old victim, who was struck on Terenure Road East, was taken to St James's Hospital but died yesterday morning. The female driver of the car was not injured.
Meanwhile, a man in his 20s died in a collision involving a car and a lorry in Ballylongford, north Kerry.
It is understood the collision occurred at a bend on the main Ballylongford to Listowel road, about two miles from Ballylongford, at 1.20pm.
The truck may have been stopped or parked at the time of the crash. The man who died was the car driver.
Porter jailed for sex assault
A hotel porter who sexually assaulted a female guest after he crept into her room using a master key, has been jailed for 12 months.
Muhammed Ahmed (26) pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting the woman in December while he was a night porter at the five-star Lyrath Estate Hotel, Kilkenny city.
Ahmed, New Oak East, Carlow, broke down in tears when the sentence was read out. Judge William Harnett sentenced Ahmed to 10 months in prison on the charge of sexual assault and two months, to run consecutively, in relation to indecent text messages. He was granted leave to appeal.
Surprise at call for drink warning
The drinks industry has expressed surprise at calls for alcohol warnings to be introduced for pregnant women, as it said the introduction of such labels has already been agreed.
"The question is not if these warnings will be introduced, it's when . . . and the industry is awaiting firm proposals from Government on the detail of how this can be advanced", Ray Gordon of the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland said.
Alcohol Action Ireland (AAI) repeated its call for such labelling, to coincide with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder Day yesterday. The AAI said it was aware that labelling was in the pipeline and had used the event to highlight need for labelling, director Fiona Ryan said.
Plea to increase fuel allowance
Some older people will be forced to choose between heat and food this winter and may pay for the choice with their lives, unless the Government intervenes significantly, the lobby group Age Action Ireland has warned.
The charity is urging people to sign a petition calling for an increase in the fuel allowance and help with buying basic food stuffs.
Work resumes on 475m road
Work resumed yesterday in Co Galway on the country's second biggest road-building project after farmers removed blockades they erected on Monday. The move followed talks between farmers and the company building the €475 million N6 Galway-Ballinasloe road.
