Man to appear in court after crash death

A 35-year-old man will appear today at Downpatrick Magistrate's Court, Co Down charged in connection with a road crash in which a man died and his partner and three children were injured. Michael Molloy (36) died after the collision on the Ardglass Road outside Downpatrick on Saturday night.

The dead man's partner and three children, aged six, four and one, were taken to hospital. The woman was reported to be in a serious condition. The children all had broken bones but their conditions were not thought to be life-threatening.

Meanwhile gardaí are investigating a fatal collision at Galbally, Co Limerick, at 4.35am on Saturday.  A car left the road and struck a tree about one mile from Galbally village. There were no other vehicles involved.

A 56-year-old male passenger died at the scene while another man, aged 29, who gardaí believe was the driver, was taken to South Tipperary General Hospital where he is being treated for minor injuries.

Three men face heroin charges

Three men are due back in court this morning having been charged at a special court sitting over the weekend in connection with a major heroin seizure by gardaí on the outskirts of Cork city last week.

John Carey (21), of Brooklodge Grove, Glanmire, Co Cork, Aidan Finnegan (28), of Farranferris Green, Farranree, Cork, and Alan Morrison (30), of Coultry Road, Ballymun, Dublin, alias Alan Walsh, Berryfield Crescent, Finglas, Dublin, were all charged at a special sitting of Killarney District Court with three offences connected with the finding of €13,000 worth of heroin at Brooklodge, Glanmire, on September 4th.

Judge Leo Malone remanded all three in custody to appear at Cork District Court this morning.

Five questioned on explosives find

Four men and a woman were last night being questioned in Galway after a large quantity of explosives was discovered when gardaí stopped a car in Oranmore.

Gardaí believe the explosives were for use by organised crime. More explosives were found in a follow-up search of a house in the area. In total, 17.5kg of commercial explosives were seized.

42 medals won at transplant games

The Irish team returned home from the European Transplant and Dialysis Games in Wurzburg, Germany, last night with 42 medals. The 23-person team came third in the medals table with 13 gold, 20 silver and nine bronze medals.

Almost 400 athletes from 24 countries took part. Dublin is due to host the event for the first time in 2010. Team manager Colin White said the Irish result was "fantastic but even if we didn't win a medal, all of these athletes are champions".

Separate focus on disability 'vital'

The retention of a dedicated independent agency focused on disability issues was vital, the National Disability Authority (NDA) said yesterday in a statement.

Authority chairwoman Angela Kerins said there were significant challenges in addressing the needs of people with disabilities who were among the more vulnerable persons in society and the national disability strategy was at a critical stage of implementation.
