Warning over power washer salesmen
Homeowners in Wexford have been warned by gardaí against buying power washers from door-to-door salesmen.
People have been offered top-of-the-range power washers for €1,200, but gardaí have warned that the deal does not end there.
Should a person purchase a machine, the salesman will return around one week later, say gardaí, claiming that there is a fault. He informs the owner that the machine needs to be returned to the manufacturer, and replaces the power washer with a much cheaper product. But gardaí warn that is the last the purchaser will see of the machine.
Bogus welfare inspector alert
Gardaí in Co Mayo have issued a warning about a bogus Department of Social Welfare inspector who is trying to obtain personal bank details from unsuspecting elderly people in the area, writes Tom Sheil.
One householder in the Swinford area was persuaded to divulge his bank account details after being told that such information was needed in order to obtain his pension.
Two hospitalised after boat mishap
Two people were hospitalised yesterday after a cruise boat ran aground near Coose Bay on Lough Derg in Co Clare, writes Pat Flynn.
At around 11am a hired cruise boat with seven people on board ran on to rocks at Stick Rock in Coose Bay.
One woman is understood to have sustained a broken nose, while an elderly man was also taken to hospital in Nenagh as a precaution.
The Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat, based at Dromineer, Co Tipperary, went to the scene where they found the vessel stuck on a rock shelf.
