Two men held after major drug seizure
Two men were in custody yesterday following the seizure of almost €500,000 of drugs and €50,000 in cash during gardaí searches of two properties in Dublin.
Some €100,000 of heroin, €40,000 worth of valium tablets and €45,000 in cash were discovered during a search of a house on Sean McDermott Street in the inner city on Wednesday morning. A firearm and 10 rounds of ammunition were also discovered.
A man in his 20s and a youth were arrested and taken to Pearse Street Garda station.
A follow-up search of a property in Balbriggan in north Co Dublin uncovered heroin valued at €300,000, as well as €20,000 worth of valium tablets and €3,000 in cash.
A man in his late 20s was arrested in connection with the seizure.
Gardaí last night said one of the males had been released and that a file was being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Jobs lost at Tipperary plant
The loss of two dozen jobs at a north Tipperary glazing company was confirmed yesterday.
The Taylor Made glazing plant in Templemore has laid off approximately a fifth of its workforce.
The majority of the employees laid off by Taylor Made Glass and Systems have been with the company for two years or more. The US-based Taylor Made Group, which has 1,500 employees worldwide, is the world's largest manufacturer of glazing for boats.
Labour Senator Alan Kelly yesterday called on FÁS to ensure that retraining facilities are available.
Fall victim had MRSA twice
A woman who was admitted to a Dublin hospital after sustaining a head injury due to a fall contracted the hospital superbug MRSA on two occasions before her death, an inquest heard yesterday.
Maureen Kelly (85), Broombridge Road, Cabra, Dublin was taken to the Mater Hospital after falling on October 7th, 2007. Two weeks later Mrs Kelly contracted pneumonia and tested positive for the hospital superbug MRSA.
She recovered well , but Mrs Kelly contracted a second bout of MRSA pneumonia on December 27th and died six days later.
Dublin City Coroner Dr Brian Farrell recorded a cause of death as head injuries due to a fall.
Weekend delays on M50 expected
Motorists have been warned of travel disruption this weekend on the M50 motorway due to lane closures.
The far right lane, southbound, from the Westlink toll plaza through to the Ballymount interchange, will remain closed until 6am tomorrow. Further closures may be announced over the weekend and details will be available on AARoadwatch.ie
Payout for replaced worker
The former manager of a government-funded women's support group in Co Clare who claimed a situation was concocted to replace her with a junior worker on half of her wages has been awarded €20,400 for unfair dismissal.
The three members of an Employment Appeals Tribunal were unanimous that Avril De Carteret of Druminalough, Peterswell, Co Galway, was unfairly dismissed by the Clare Women's Network of Clonroad Business Park, Clonroad, Ennis.
Speedboat found in housing estate
Gardaí in Killarney, Co Kerry have recovered a speedboat stolen in Banagher Co Offaly in the early hours of August 18th, 2008.
The 'Supra Launch 22 SSV' speedboat was taken from the marina at Banagher, and has been found by gardaí in a housing estate in Killarney.
