Charged with possession of cocaine

A MAN HAS appeared in court charged in connection with the possession of cocaine with an estimated street value of €37,000.

Mark Doolan (39), Rockfield, Glenconnor, Clonmel, was charged with simple possession of the drugs and possession for sale or supply.

Det Garda Seán Walsh of Carrick-on-Suir Garda station gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution at a special sitting of the District Court in Waterford.

Mr Doolan replied "No thanks" when informed of both charges, the court heard.

He was granted free legal aid and remanded in custody to appear at Clonmel District Court next Tuesday.

Cancer support group warns FF

Cancer campaigners have vowed to target Fianna Fáil seats in the northwest in next year's local elections in protest at the planned removal of breast cancer services from Sligo General Hospital.

Killian McLoughlin, a member of the Save Sligo's Cancer Services lobby group, said local Fianna Fáil politicians seemed to be "either unwilling or unable" to halt the plan "so what is the point of having them there?"

He said he expected a number of campaigners to run against Government candidates if the services are moved.

Death of former mayor of Cork

The death has occurred of former lord mayor of Cork Frank Nash, who represented the Labour Party in the city for 20 years. Mr Nash (66) died at his home in Dillon's Cross on Thursday evening, after a short illness.

He served as a councillor from 1979 to 1999 and was lord mayor of Cork from 1990-1991. He is survived by his wife, Maria and children Gillian, Patrick and Carol.

Water quality warning is lifted

Limerick County Council yesterday lifted a public water notice issued following heavy rainfall.

The local authority had advised customers served by the Rockhill public water supply in Co Limerick not to drink the water due to the presence of high nitrates. The notice was removed yesterday following consultation with the HSE.

'Bog Day' recalls ancient bards

Redwood Castle near Lorrha, Co Tipperary, is to hold a "Bog Day Afternoon" tomorrow, which will include a tour of the 14th-century home of the Mac Egans, a bardic family.

The restored castle, now in the ownership of a descendant of the clan, contains a sheepskin facsimile of the medieval Speckled Book of the Mac Egans, a manuscript of Bible stories, legends and family history written in a mix of medieval Latin and Old Irish.

The Royal Irish Academy holds the original manuscript.

Kerry celebrates telegram link

A series of events will take place on Valentia Island in south Kerry today to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the sending of the first transatlantic telegram.

The events today will include historical walking tours of the cable village of Knightstown on Valentia and the launch of a commemorative An Post stamp by ceann comhairle John O'Donoghue.

Haughey's son to launch regatta

Family members of the late taoiseach Charles Haughey will travel to the Dingle regatta this weekend to continue his close links with the annual Co Kerry boating event.

His son Conor will officially start the main races tomorrow and later present trophies to the winners.
