Crash student critically ill
A teenage girl who was due to collect her Leaving Cert results in Co Limerick yesterday was critically ill in hospital last night.
The 19-year-old suffered serious head injuries when the car she was driving crashed at about 3.30am outside the town of Bruff, on the R512 Croom road, in Co Limerick.
Asylum seeker's study hopes
An asylum seeker's Leaving Cert success was tinged with sadness.
Thomas Atcha hopes to pursue a business studies course, but faces possible deportation having had his application for asylum refused.
The Togo-born student and former member of Dáil na nÓg passed all his six subjects at Summerhill College, Sligo.
"I think I will definitely get my first choice of business marketing at Sligo IT," Mr Atcha said.
His solicitor has applied for permission for Mr Atcha to remain in Ireland on humanitarian grounds.
Smashing exam performance
A student who got top marks in the Leaving Cert last night celebrated with friends to the sounds of her favourite group, the Smashing Pumpkins.
Sinead Cawley (18), who attended Mercy College, Sligo, was one of only 13 students to achieve eight A1s.
The rock fan lives at Kintogher, near Sligo.
