Motorcyclist dies after bike strikes 4x4

A man died yesterday afternoon when his motorbike struck a four-wheel drive vehicle in Co Laois.

It was the third death on the roads over over the weekend. The collision near Ballylinan occurred at about 12.45pm.

The motorcyclist, aged 32, was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to the Midlands Regional Hospital in Portlaoise.

In a separate incident on Friday night, a teenage boy was killed as he cycled home from a circus in Co Clare.

He was named yesterday by gardaí as Mathew Collins (14), Ennistymon, Co Clare.

The boy was struck by a car as he cycled between Lahinch and Ennistymon at about 11.15pm. Gardaí spent much of Saturday completing a forensic examination of the scene.

Also on Friday night, a man died when his car collided with a truck near Portlaoise. The truck driver was not injured.

Mathew Kelly (30), Cairn, Portarlington, Co Laois, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Woman dies during regatta

A woman has died while participating in the Schull Regatta in west Cork. The woman, who has yet to be named, took ill in her boat yesterday afternoon in Roaring Water Bay.

The cause of her sudden death is unknown pending a postmortem. It is understood the woman was aged 49 and from the west Cork area and was at the event with her husband.

Army defuses Dublin pipe bomb

A pipe bomb was found over the weekend in Dublin. The device was located in the Dunsink Lane area, Finglas, at about 11pm yesterday.

Army bomb disposal experts made the improvised explosive safe but no controlled detonation was carried out. Gardaí are investigating.

Fog prevents helicopter rescue

An attempt to rescue an injured woman by helicopter from near the summit of Croagh Patrick, Co Mayo, had to be abandoned on Saturday due to dense fog, writes Tom Shiel.

The woman from Co Kerry was making the climb for her first time and was accompanied by her husband.

She was eventually carried off the mountain by stretcher by members of Mayo Mountain Rescue and was taken to hospital. She was believed to have sustained a broken ankle.

Volunteer members of Mayo Mountain Rescue abandoned their annual flag day in nearby Westport and went to the mountain when the Irish Coast Guard helicopter crew from Sligo reported that thick fog had made their rescue attempt impossible.

On their way to the summit, volunteers helped two other victims who had sustained injuries in treacherous weather conditions.

Irish pilot wins aerobatic medal

Irish pilot Eddie Goggins won a bronze medal at the Advanced World Aerobatic Championships in Pendleton, Oregon, this weekend after a week of competitive flying.

Mr Goggins (39), a pilot from Carrickmines, Co Dublin, competed in a rented aircraft against teams from around the world. He had travelled to the US without any team support or financial sponsorship.

He finished behind US and Hungarian pilots.
