Remand for raping daughter
A Co Meath resident who raped his daughter (20) has been remanded for sentence by Mr Justice Paul Carney at the Central Criminal Court. The married man (45) pleaded guilty to raping the victim at their home on July 16, 2006. Mr Justice Carney directed that his name be added to the register of sex offenders and that a victim impact statement be prepared for the sentence hearing in June.
Four years in jail for choke attack
A father of two who was caught by a garda choking his then partner with his bare hands has been jailed for four years by Judge Patricia Ryan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.
John Twomey (44) of the Glades, Woodford Acres, Palmerstown, but now living in Charlemont Street in the city centre, pleaded guilty to assaulting Alison McCarthy on July 9, 2005.
Judge Ryan noted he had €1,000 in court to offer Ms McCarthy as an expression of his remorse and that he had not come to Garda attention since the attack.
She said she also took into account that he had taken responsibility for his actions but said that it was a serious assault.
Prison for sex assault at pool
A 71-year-old retired carpenter has been given a three-year sentence for sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy at a north Dublin swimming pool.
Oliver Newman, of Hazelwood Park, Artane, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexually assaulting the boy in the changing room shower of the pool on dates between July and August 2003.
Judge Katherine Delahunt at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court suspended the final two years of sentence due to Newman's age and directed he undergo five years post release supervision after his release.
Newman admitted the assaults to gardaí and said he knew it was wrong and was disgusted at himself.
Sacking of paper executive on hold
An executive with the publishers of the Post group of local newspapers has been granted an interim High Court order preventing his dismissal.
Blair Scales (41), of Strandhill, Co Sligo, secured the injunction against River Newspaper Holdings Limited which is restrained from terminating his employment as production director with the newspaper group.
The short injunction was granted by Ms Justice Mary Laffoy.
Drugs found in Co Clare search
Gardaí in Co Clare have made what has been described as a "significant" drugs seizure following a series of planned searches which lasted several hours yesterday.
The operation, on the Watery Road in Ennis, was the second "significant" seizure in four days. Cannabis resin, ecstasy and amphetamine with an estimated value of €53,000 were recovered.
