17 die in suicide attack in Afghanistan
KANDAHAR -At least 17 people, including two police officers, died yesterday when a suicide bomber blew himself up in a bazaar in the southwestern Afghan province of Nimroz, the provincial governor said.
The attack happened near a mosque in Nimroz's provincial capital Zaranj just after dusk, Ghula Dastagir Azad said.
"I can say that at least 17 people, including two police officers, have been killed and 35 have been wounded in this suicide attack."
He said children were among the victims of the attack, the latest example of increasing violence in Afghanistan following the winter lull. - (Reuters)
Rhys Jones murder charge
LONDON -A 17-year-old youth was remanded in custody yesterday, charged with the murder of Liverpool schoolboy Rhys Jones.
The 11-year-old was shot in the neck in the Croxteth area of the city last August after returning from football practice.
The 17-year-old appeared at Liverpool Magistrates Court and will return to court on April 25th, the BBC reported.
Police have also charged three youths, aged 15, 16 and 17, and two men, Melvyn Coy (24) and Gary Kayes (25), with assisting an offender.
The 16-year-old was also charged with possession of a firearm. None of the youths can be named for legal reasons. - (PA)
