Joe Burke set for Mahon tribunal date
The chairman of Dublin Port Company, Joe Burke, a close associate of Taoiseach Bertie Ahern is to appear at the Mahon inquiry on May 1st.
Mr Burke was to have given evidence on April 9th but that appearance was cancelled. Developer Tom Gilmartin has said Mr Burke sought money for assistance in acquiring lands at Quarryvale, Dublin, from Dublin Corporation.
Public appeal over assault
A public appeal for information has been made by the wife of a Sligo man who is in a Belfast hospital with serious injuries following an attack.
Margaret Newton made the fresh appeal after visiting her husband Paul at the Royal Victoria Hospital where he is receiving treatment for fractures to his skull and jaw.
Mr Newton (43) was in Belfast last week to attend a rugby match between Connacht and Ulster.
"He went to a takeaway restaurant and was returning to his hotel when he was the victim of an assault," she said. Mrs Newton appealed for anyone with information to help the police.
Police have trawled CCTV footage and have made a special appeal for two women who they know where sitting at a bus stop in Bradbury Place when the assault took place to contact them.
Emergency landing at Dublin
An Aer Lingus flight travelling from Dublin to Portugal was forced to make an emergency landing at Dublin airport yesterday evening shortly after 6pm due to a technical problem.
A spokeswoman for Aer Lingus said the incident occurred when an indicator light in the cockpit of flight EI 498 to Faro, which departed Dublin at 5.20pm, suggested a problem with the aircraft's hydraulics.
Murder accused is remanded
A man accused of murder appeared before the Special Criminal Court yesterday.
Gerard Mackin (25), Raheen Close, Tallaght, Dublin, is charged with the murder of Edward Burns (36) and the attempted murder of Damien O'Neill at Bog Meadows, Falls Road, Belfast, on March 12th last year.
He is also charged with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Mr O'Neill and possession of a revolver with intent to endanger life.
Mr Justice Paul Butler, presiding at the three-judge court, remanded Mr Mackin in custody until the end of May when the case will be mentioned again and a trial date set for October.
Woman stabbed in Limerick
A woman (25) was in a serious condition in hospital last night after she was stabbed by two other women in a daylight attack in Limerick yesterday.
She was stabbed at 3.15pm in Clare Street and suffered a deep cut to her side.Two women were seen running from the area. The victim was recovering in hospital last night where her condition was described as stable.
