Over 41% of migrants in Tralee to stay
Some 41 per cent of migrants who took part in a study in Tralee intend staying in the town on a permanent basis, a study of foreign nationals has found. The Kerry town is home to more than 3,500 migrants.
For most of those surveyed, the town was their first destination, but there was a pattern "of chain immigration" in that as many as 20 per cent arrived because family and friends were established there.
Almost half said they came because wages were four times the level in Poland and several more times that than in the Philippines.
Tralee's 251 asylum seekers had no choice but to live in Kerry - they had been sent there by the Reception and Integration Area, the study found. Migrants from 37 countries took part in The Needs of Migrants and their Families, March 2008.
