Gardaí seek to speak to man seen with TV
Gardaí investigating the murder of a 62-year-old man in Cork city at the weekend have appealed to the public for assistance in tracing a man seen carrying a television last Friday evening close to the scene of the crime. The body of retired barman Donal Manley was found near the foot of the stairs at his house on High Street, Capwell, Cork city.
A television was missing from the house and gardaí are trying to establish whether a man seen carrying a television along High Street and Douglas Road at around 5.30pm on Friday may be linked to the killing. Mr Manley was last seen alive at around midday on Friday. Supt Mick Finn of Anglesea Street Garda station told The Irish Timesthey had a sighting of a man in a red jacket with an umbrella carrying a television along High Street and trying to flag down a taxi on Friday evening.
Kilkenny crash victims named
The two men who died in the road traffic collision in Co Kilkenny on Tuesday were named yesterday as Paul Martin (30), Hunters Lane, Ashbourne, Co Meath, and Brian O'Keeffe (22), Cloughmore, Achill, Co Mayo.
Gardaí are investigating the crash on the N76 Kilkenny to Callan Road at 4.25pm. The men died when their car struck a lorry. There were no other occupants in the car. The driver of the lorry received minor injuries.
Portlaoise Prison tensions ease
Tensions have eased at Portlaoise Prison following protests by paramilitary inmates in recent days over the searching of cells and segregation of prisoners at the facility. The Prison Service said the protest was "minor" and "non-violent" and it had been dealt with quickly and in a non-confrontational manner.
According to sources, full chamber pots were thrown at staff during the protests by INLA and Real IRA members on Monday and Tuesday, which forced the closure of a food preparation area. The source said the disturbances ended only after two INLA inmates were released from segregation.
A prison source last night denied that any demands of prisoners had been met.
There are eight INLA and 30 Real IRA prisoners in the jail. The protest is believed to be the first time members of the two groups, usually rivals, held a joint protest.
Mass for woman missing in US
A Mass will be celebrated in Drumcondra, Dublin, on Saturday for an Irishwoman missing off the coast of California.
Nuala O'Donohoe, who travelled to the US to take part in a retreat, has been missing for more than a week.
Rangers at Sonoma Coast State Park told local newspapers that Ms O'Donohoe had been meditating on a rocky outcrop in Horseshoe Cove at Salt Point park on Saturday, October 4th, and it appeared that she had been washed into the ocean. She was with others from the retreat but they were meditating individually, out of view of each other, according to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat.
The Department of Foreign Affairs is offering assistance to her family.
The Mass will take place at 11am in Corpus Christi Church, Homefarm Road, Drumcondra.
