Man admits dangerous driving

A Dublin man has admitted to dangerous driving causing the death of a woman.

Eric Doyle (43), Whitechurch Avenue, Ballyboden, Co Dublin, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of Lily Hastings-Bass on the Rathgar Road on November 26th, 2006.

Dominic McGinn, prosecuting, requested the preparation of a victim impact report for the sentence hearing, which has been set for February. Doyle was remanded on continuing bail.

Two men on gun charges

Two men charged with having a gun and ammunition in Dundalk were remanded until December by the Special Criminal Court yesterday. Thomas Kelly (26), of Killinarden Estate, Tallaght, and Eugene Kelly (42), of Ashling Park, Cox's Demesne, Dundalk, Co Louth, are each charged with possession of a semi-automatic pistol and fifty rounds of ammunition at Castletown Rd, Dundalk, on July 19th last.

Man tested gun in Phoenix Park

A man who claimed he bought a sawn-off shotgun because his brother became involved in a feud in Mountjoy prison, and who later tested the weapon in the Phoenix Park, has been given a four-year sentence.

Patrick Dunne (28), of Dunsoghly Avenue, Finglas West, said he bought the double-barrelled gun for €1,100 but a check revealed it had been stolen from a Cavan home.

He brought it to the park and fired three shots before he got frightened by some park rangers and fled, throwing the gun on the ground.

Judge Katherine Delahunt suspended the last two years.

Suspended terms for drug dealers

Two reformed drug addicts who sold heroin to undercover gardaí six times have been given suspended jail terms after Judge Katherine Delahunt accepted that they had both turned their lives around.

Daniel Henderson (23) and Denis Ward (37) sold the drugs to gardaí acting in separate undercover Garda operations in Ballymun and Ballyfermot.

Sentence later for part in attack

A teenage girl has been remanded on continuing bail pending sentence for her part in a vicious gang mugging of a woman who was beaten with a belt strap and had her wages robbed.

The girl (17) had pleaded guilty previously at the Children's Court to robbery at Malahide Marina, Co Dublin, on November 24th, 2006.

Judge Smyth adjourned sentencing the teenager, who is on bail, until December.

Further charges had been brought against the girl for a drink-fuelled incident last June where she tried to attack gardaí.

Novelist Tóibín in Penguin deal

Novelist Colm Tóibín is to release two new novels and a collection of short stories with Penguin publishing.

Penguin announced yesterday it had acquired the books and short stories and Mr Tóibíns new novel is titled Brooklyn. It will be published in May 2009 by Viking, a division of Penguin.
