Man guilty of dangerous driving
A Laois father of one has received a three-year suspended sentence along with a €2,500 fine and a seven-year driving ban for dangerous driving causing the death of a nursing home care worker.
Andrew Keogh (24), Carmody Way, Fairgreen, Portlaoise, was driving his car with three passengers at 120km/h in a 60km/h zone when he crashed into a car at the entrance to a caravan park.
Keogh, a former truck mechanic, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to dangerous driving on April 21st, 2006, at Mount Seskin Road, Brittas, causing the death of Sabrina Lynch (28).
Judge Katherine Delahunt noted that the aggravating factors were that a death had occurred and Keogh had been speeding but said she did not feel the case fell into "the boy racer" category.
Illegal dumping sentence adjourned
A waste disposal company, its director and a truck driver contracted to the company have had their sentences adjourned at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on charges of illegal dumping at sites in Wicklow. Swalcliff Ltd, East Wall Industrial Complex, pleaded guilty through solicitor Vincent Shannon it held or disposed of waste in a manner that caused or was likely to cause environmental pollution on dates unknown between August 3rd, 2001, and October 22nd, 2001, at lands owned by Clifford Fenton at Coolnamadra, Donard.
Louis Moriarty, a hotelier, of Griffith Avenue, Drumcondra, pleaded guilty to disposing of waste in a manner that could cause pollution at the Coolnamadra site and at Whitestown, Baltinglass, on dates in 2001.
Adrian Munnelly (27), a truck driver of Main Street, Ballynacargy, Co Westmeath, pleaded guilty to similar charges in relation to Coolnamadra only.
Judge Katherine Delahunt adjourned the case following an application by Patrick Gageby SC, defence counsel for Moriarty and Swalcliff Ltd, to allow him consider new items of disclosure.
18-month sentence on gun charge
A man who placed an advert to sell his illegally held pistols has been given an 18-month sentence and fined €300 by Judge Katherine Delahunt at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court. Pavels Samosjuks (23), from Latvia and living in Swords, Co Dublin, advertised in a Russian language newspaper to sell blank firing pistols he brought in his luggage from his homeland. Another Latvian, Ivars Bobins (27), bought a pistol from him for €350.
Samosjuks, of Carnegie Avenue, pleaded guilty to possession of firearms and ammunition at his home on January 27th, 2007, while Bobins, of Boroimhe Beech, pleaded guilty to possession of ammunition at his home on January 28th, 2007.
Judge Delahunt imposed an 18-month sentence with nine months suspended on Samosjuks, and a suspended sentence of six months on Bobins.
