Mexican gang kills family in revenge attack
QUINTIN ARAUZ – Suspected drug gang hitmen shot dead the grieving mother, brother and sister of an elite Mexican marine who died after taking part in a raid that killed a top drug lord, police said yesterday. In what appeared to be a revenge attack for last weeks navy operation, gunmen burst into the familys house in the town of Quintin Arauz just before midnight on Monday and fired assault rifles. – (Reuters)
Prince sleeps rough for charity
LONDON – Prince William spent a night sleeping rough on the streets of London last week to raise awareness for the homeless, charity Centrepoint said yesterday.
William, second in line to the throne and Centrepoint patron, and his private secretary, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, slept on cardboard boxes in freezing temperatures on Blackfriars bridge. – (Reuters)
Rolling Stone attacks ex-lover
SURREY – Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood was cautioned yesterday for attacking his Russian ex-girlfriend Ekaterina Ivanova.
The 62-year-old guitarist was questioned by police after clashing with his on-off girlfriend in the street in Esher, Surrey, on December 2nd. He agreed to be cautioned at a Surrey police station. – (PA)
Sarkozy plans carbon cuts talks
PARIS – French president Nicolas Sarkozy wants to hold international talks in Paris next year to seek agreement on carbon emission cuts following the Copenhagen climate conference, environmental groups said yesterday.
Mr Sarkozy has met representatives from several environmental groups to discuss the Copenhagen meeting. – (Reuters)
Giuliani rules out bid for governor
NEW YORK – Former New York mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who won acclaim for his leadership following the September 11th attacks in 2001, yesterday said he does not intend to run for New York governor or the US Senate in 2010.
Mr Giuliani, who unsuccessfully sought the Republican presidential nomination in 2008, said he would endorse Republican Rick Lazio for New York governor. – (Reuters)
