Tributes paid to Waterford broadcaster
Tributes have been paid to veteran Waterford city broadcaster Tony Weldon, who has died aged 70.
The entertainer and presenter with radio station WLRfm was best known for his programme Sunday Morning Melodies, which ended in 2003.
Waterford’s Val Doonican and Alfie Hale were among those who paid tribute to Mr Weldon.
Minister for Arts, Sport and Tourism and Waterford TD Martin Cullen said Mr Weldon, Mount Sion Crescent, Waterford city, was “a great local person and a great local entertainer and his passing will mean he will be sorely missed”.
Des Whelan, managing director of WLRfm said: “On behalf of management, staff and all [of] his former colleagues, WLRfm wishes to offer sincere condolences to Bernadette and the family of the late Tony Weldon.”
Jury retires in Cavan murder trial
A jury at the trial of a Cavan man accused of murder has been sent home for the night, having been deliberating for almost half an hour. Trevor McCabe (34), Mountpleasant, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan has pleaded not guilty to murdering Darren McGrath (33), in Belturbet, Co Cavan, on May 20th
last year. It is the prosecution's case that Mr McCabe shot Mr McGrath as he slept. They said that Mr McCabe entered the house with a shotgun at approximately 5am, shot Mr McGrath twice,
and then drove off. During the trial, the court heard from the deceased man's partner, Nicole
Lennon, who told the court that the accused man was the assailant.
The jury will resume its deliberations today.
EUR11.9m action taken against Murtagh
A Sligo family have taken High Court action over money they said was lent for investment abroad.
The Monaghan Family Trust has brought a claim for summary judgment for EUR11.9 million against businessman Brendan Murtagh and others over money allegedly loaned by the trust for a major
development in Poland. The proceedings by Ray and Eileen Monaghan, Rossaville,
Ballincar, Co Sligo, on behalf of the Monaghan family partnership, was admitted to the Commercial Court yesterday by Mr Justice Peter Kelly on the application of Michael Cush SC.
The judge listed the summary judgment application for hearing on July 24th.
It is claimed the partnership on December 7th, 2007, agreed to provide the defendants with an on
demand loan facility for some EUR10 million to be used to buy properties in Szczecin,
Poland, with the principal amount to be repaid on July 30th, 2008. Due to the alleged failure to
repay the principal by then, it is claimed some EUR11.9 million is now due and owing for principal, interest and other costs.
Judgment reserved in fraud appeal
The Court of Criminal Appeal has reserved judgment on an appeal by a consultant surgeon and his
wife against their convictions for defrauding insurance companies of almost EUR750,000 through a false breast cancer claim. Dr Emad Massoud (53), Woodview, Brownstown, Ratoath, Co Meath and his wife, Gehan Massoud (46), a nurse, were convicted in March 2008 by a jury following a three week trial. It was argued on behalf of Emad and Gehan Massoud, that their convictions are
unsafe and should be set aside. Emad Massoud was jailed for four years by Judge Patrick McCartan at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court while Gehan Massoud got a three year suspended sentence
