Second swine flu death in Scotland
LONDON – Britain suffered its second death from H1N1 flu late on Saturday after a 73-year-old man with serious health problems died from the virus in a Scottish hospital, Scotland’s health minister said yesterday.
“Although it is concerning that the patient had swine flu, we are aware that the patient had very serious underlying health issues,” said Scottish health secretary Nicola Sturgeon. “It’s important to remember that the vast majority of those who have H1N1 are suffering from relatively mild symptoms,” she added. – (Reuters)
Springsteen in curfew breach
LONDON – Bruce Springsteen cost Glastonbury boss Michael Eavis £3,000 when his set breached a curfew by nine minutes – but the farmer still declared the festival “the best ever”.
The Boss played for two hours and 40 minutes, finishing just before 12.40am. But the mammoth turn put the rocker beyond the watershed, Eavis said. He did not mind paying because Springsteen played some of his best known works in the last few minutes. – (Reuters)
Teen stable after lightning strike
BIRMINGHAM – A 16-year-old boy is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after suffering a heart attack when he was struck by lightning.
West Midlands ambulance service said five other teenagers were taken to hospital after the lightning strike in a Birmingham park yesterday. – (PA)
Building collapse kills 5 in Lagos
LAGOS – A three-storey building collapsed in Nigeria’s main commercial city of Lagos yesterday during torrential rains, killing at least five people and seriously injuring scores more, rescue workers said.
The building, situated inside a railway compound, collapsed in the early hours of Sunday, a police spokesman said. – (Reuters)
