Judge Geoffrey Browne was told that Mr Dunleavy was being held at St Patrick’s Institution for young offenders in Dublin and was applying for a remand to Castlerea Prison, Co Roscommon.

Insp Joe McKenna told Harristown District Court, next door to the prison in Castlerea, that the prosecution had no objection. Mr Dunleavy was remanded in custody to Castlerea Prison to appear at Harristown Court again on May 15th.

In a separate hearing a few minutes later, Leaving Cert student Jamie McGrenaghan (18), also with an address in Kerrykeel and who has been on bail since last week, was again remanded on bail.

He is to appear again at Letterkenny District Court on May 21st.

Neither defendant spoke in court.

Mr Dunleavy was led from the court by a prison officer. Mr McGrenaghan left with his mother, Margaret Rita McGrenaghan, who posted €4,000 bail for him in Buncrana District Court last week.

He is charged with dangerous driving and causing serious harm to Garda McCallion (29) in Tara Court, Letterkenny, on March 26th.

He is also charged, along with Mr Dunleavy, with stealing another car in Tara Court on the same date.

Garda McCallion died in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, and was buried in his home town of Swinford, Co Mayo, earlier this week.

Latvian man died ‘of natural causes’

Gardaí in Galway have said that foul play is not suspected in relation to the death of a man whose body was found in a city residence on Thursday.

A postmortem which was conducted by Deputy State Pathologist Dr Michael Curtis yesterday indicated that the 46-year-old man had died of natural causes.

The man, who was of Latvian nationality, was found dead on Thursday evening at an apartment in the riverside area of Galway city, close to the N17.

It is understood that he had been living in Galway for the past few years, and had been working in construction for a time.

His name is not being released until all relatives have been informed.
