Court to review Carmody retrial decision
A High Court judicial review of the decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to retry former Killaloe GP Paschal Carmody on deception charges is to take place in December.
At Ennis Circuit Court yesterday, counsel for the State, Stephen Coughlan, said the High Court review of the case relating to Mr Carmody (60), of Ballycuggeran, Killaloe, was imminent.
Counsel for Mr Carmody, Catherine Staines, told the court that the High Court judicial review will be heard on December 8th.
At Ennis Circuit Court in July of last year, after a four-week trial, a jury found Mr Carmody not guilty on six charges of obtaining money by deception from terminally ill cancer patients.
The jury also failed to reach a verdict on the remaining 11 charges.
Judge Rory McCabe had already directed the jury to return a not guilty verdict in relation to eight charges.
The DPP is seeking that the new trial be staged in Dublin.
Gardaí arrest four in Tralee search
Four people were arrested and a variety of weapons were seized when gardaí carried out a series of searches in housing estates on the edge of Tralee yesterday.
This follows another serious eruption of violence in an ongoing feud between rival Traveller families late on Monday night.
The Garda armed regional support unit was called in from Limerick to support local gardaí in Mitchels Crescent and St Martin’s Park area on the edge of the town on Monday night.
Up to 40 Travellers, masked and armed with a variety of weapons, descended on the houses of rival families at 10.30pm.
Yesterday, Supt Pat Sullivan said 17 gardaí were involved in the house searches.
Deadline to save 163 Shannon jobs
Workers and management at Shannon firm Element Six were last night anxiously awaiting a recommendation from the Labour Court which, if accepted by both sides, could save 163 jobs at the plant.
Today was set as a deadline by company management for agreement on a sustainability plan.
Management has warned that if a deal cannot be reached by today, a winding down of operations will start before the end of the year with the loss of 370 jobs.
Man in custody over Roy Collins murder
A 25-year-old man was in custody in Limerick last night in connection with the murder of businessman Roy Collins.
The 34-year-old father of two was shot dead on April 9th last at the family-owned Coincastle Amusement Arcade, in Roxboro shopping centre.
Yesterday, gardaí investigating the murder arrested a 25-year-old man as part of their inquiries.
The suspect was arrested in Meelick, Co Clare, on the outskirts of Limerick.
