Cody autobiography launched in Kilkenny

Hurling legend Brian Cody launched his autobiography in his native Kilkenny last night.

Cody includes a personal diary of the year leading up to this year's final.

The primary school teacher, who is the most successful GAA manager in modern times, took Kilkenny to its fourth all-Ireland senior hurling title in a row this month. Cody has notched up a record seven all-Ireland titles in the last decade.

Youth remanded over fatal stabbing

A youth appeared at Cork District Court yesterday charged in connection with the fatal stabbing at the weekend, writes Olivia Kelleher

The 17-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was arrested on Saturday arising out of the death of father-of-one Shannon Ruby (30), Youghal, east Cork.

He was charged yesterday with intentionally or recklessly causing serious harm to Mr Ruby, at Ard na Gréine, Blarney, Co Cork, on September 26th.

Garda Alan Johnson told the court the youth made no reply after caution. He also said the State was objecting to bail.

The court heard that more serious charges could be considered in the coming weeks or months.

Judge Uinsin Mac Gruairc refused bail and remanded the youth to St Patrick’s Detention Centre.

He will appear before Cork District Court on October 2nd.

Boil water notice for Inis Mór residents

More than 800 residents on the largest Aran island, Inis Mór, have been advised to boil drinking water following a contamination in the supply, writes Lorna Siggins.

The problem may be due to a malfunction in the supply’s chlorination system, according to Galway County Council. It has issued the boil water notice on a precautionary basis, following consultation with the Health Service Executive West.

Man (31) remanded for woman’s murder

A man charged with the murder of Argos worker and part-time model Lisa Doyle (24) has been further remanded in custody,

Gerard O’Hara (31), High Street, Leighlinbridge, Co Carlow, appeared before Cloverhill District Court yesterday.

Mr O’Hara is accused of murdering Ms Doyle at a house in Leighlinbridge on the morning of Sunday, September 20th.

Garda Sgt Stephen Nalty applied yesterday for Mr O’Hara to be remanded in custody for a further three weeks.

Judge Ann Watkin remanded him to appear again at Cloverhill on October 19th.

Solicitor Pádraig O’Donovan represented Mr O’Hara, who is unemployed.

Two badly hurt in Tralee knife attacks

Gardaí in Tralee, Co Kerry, are investigating two “very serious” assaults involving knives in the town.

The scenes have been sealed off and the injured people remain in a serious condition at Kerry General Hospital.

The first incident, in which a Polish man in his 20s had his throat cut, occurred early on Sunday morning at a house at Oakview village near Tralee’s dog track.

In an incident on the western side of Tralee, at Marina Apartments, a local man also in his 20s was attacked in an apartment, beaten and stabbed a number of times.

Gardaí do not believe the incidents are linked. However, a source said both victims were lucky to be alive.

The scenes have been sealed off for technical examination.
