Teenager under house arrest for his safety

A Dublin teenager who has been subjected to serious threats is to remain under 24-hour house arrest for his own safety.

The order, originally set down by the Children’s Court in January, has been extended for a further four weeks pending efforts by social services to place the boy (14) in a residential care facility outside Dublin.

Judge Ann Ryan remanded the boy to appear again in May pending the decision.

The bail set down in January with the conditions restricting the boy’s movement was continued.

The court had heard before that gardaí were “aware of the serious threat he is under”. The boy had pleaded guilty earlier to Public Order Act charges.

In January, the court heard that the boy’s safety at his home address was an issue.

Man held after cannabis found

A man has been arrested following a raid on a suspected cannabis-growing factory in which €40,000 worth of the drug was discovered. He was arrested after gardaí raided a house at Burren Manor in Carlow town on Monday.

The man was being held last night at Carlow Garda station under section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act.

Woman for trial over car death

A woman has been sent forward for trial charged with dangerous driving which caused the death of another woman near her home in Galway two years ago.

N M Devi Chalikonda, Cnoc an Glas, Spiddal, a doctor, was charged at Galway District Court with dangerous driving causing the death of Eileen O’Halloran (67), at Cregboy, Claregalway, on August 28th, 2007.

On the application of Insp Mick Coppinger, Judge Mary Fahy sent the woman forward for trial to Galway Circuit Criminal Court on May 5th.

Girl faces sentence for syringe attack

A 17-year-old girl has been remanded on bail pending sentence for a traumatising robbery at St Stephen’s Green, in Dublin, where she produced a syringe to two young children who believed it was filled with blood.

Two girls, aged 12 and 13, were too scared to leave their homes for weeks in the aftermath of the robbery, Judge Ann Ryan heard at the Dublin Children’s Court yesterday.

Judge Ryan agreed to retain the case in the Children’s Court. She remanded the girl on bail until June for pre-sentencing reports on her to be obtained and also sought victim impact statements.

“I would like the victim impact report to be filled out by their parents I don’t want to disturb the children further,” she said, as she adjourned the case.

Boy remanded over school fire

A 14-year-old boy, who allegedly caused €850,000 worth of damage by starting a fire which gutted a Gaelscoil in Lucan, Dublin, last year, was further remanded in custody yesterday to a juvenile detention centre.

The boy is charged with causing criminal damage to Gaelscoil Naomh Pádraig, a national school and criminal damage to three waste bins, in April last year. He was aged 13 at the time.

Judge Ann Ryan yesterday further remanded him in custody to the National Remand and Assessment Centre in Finglas, Dublin, for another three weeks to allow assessments to be completed.
