Boy (13) dies in tractor incident
A-13-year old boy has been fatally injured in a farm accident in Longford. The incident occurred at Clonaugh, just outside Drumlish, at about 5pm yesterday. It is understood the accident involved a tractor.
Garda and the HSA are investigating the incident, which occurred on the family farm.
Convicted of indecent assault
A Co Wicklow man who had a market garden business 30 years ago was convicted of indecent assault on a boy who worked for him in the 1970s. The jury returned guilty verdicts on 19 counts of indecent assault against the now 60-year-old man at Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.
Judge Michael O’Shea adjourned the case to June 30th for sentencing.
Man arrested in murder inquiry
Gardaí investigating the murder of John Carroll on February 18th, 2009, arrested a 61-year-old man yesterday. He was being detained last night at Kevin Street Garda station under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
Warning over food supplement
The public has been warned not to take a brand of food supplement following reports it has been contaminated with a banned drug that has been linked to at least three deaths in Ireland, writes Kilian Doyle.
The supplement, labelled as Fortodol or Leppin Miradin, is marketed by its US manufacturer Donsbach as a herbal pain reliever. It has recently been linked to 11 cases of liver failure and at least two deaths in Norway and Sweden.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said samples of the supplement have been found to be contaminated with nimesulide, an anti-inflammatory drug that was taken off the Irish market in May 2007. Some 53 liver-related adverse reactions, including nine cases of liver failure and three deaths, were reported to the Irish Medicines Board before the drug was banned.
Irish aid for Gaza seized in Egypt
Egyptian police have prevented four Irish containers with humanitarian aid from being delivered to Gaza. The Department of Foreign Affairs has said it is “actively engaged with the Egyptian authorities” to try and resolve the situation.
The four containers are part of a consignment of aid from Ireland, Britain and France which has been held up at the Egyptian port of Alexandria. The containers were filled by the Galway Palestine Children’s Appeal and the Cork Palestine Children’s Authority almost two months ago, following a public appeal.
Man charged with boy’s murder
A MAN appeared in court yesterday charged with the murder of north Belfast schoolboy Thomas Devlin. Gary Taylor (22) has also been accused of attempting to murder a friend of the 15-year-old victim during the knife attack nearly four years ago. Mr Taylor, of Ross House, Mount Vernon, Belfast, was arrested yesterday morning after giving himself up to police, a judge was told.
Thomas Devlin was stabbed to death close to his home in the Fort William area as he and two friends returned from buying sweets in August 2005. Mr Taylor was remanded in custody to appear again by video-link on Friday.
Third Croke Park date for U2
U2 have announced that they will play a third and final concert in Croke Park on Monday, July 27th, as had been widely expected. Tickets for the final show will go on sale on April 1st, at 8am.
