Woman dies after crash
An 87-year-old woman who was involved in a car crash earlier this week has died at Mayo General Hospital.
On Wednesday Patricia Backman, a widow, from Cloghans, Ballina, was a passenger in a car which went off the road near Foxford. Gardaí are investigating the reason for the single vehicle crash.
Lecture on role of Citizen Army
Historian Dr Ann Matthews is to deliver the Hugh Geraghty Memorial Lecture next week on the role of the Irish Citizen Army in the 1916 Revolution.
The lecture, organised by the Irish Labour History Society, commemorates the work of Mr Geraghty, a lifelong trade unionist, who died two years ago.
Dr Matthews completed a doctoral thesis in NUI Maynooth in 2004 on Women activists in Irish republican politics 1900-1914 and is currently working on a history of the Kimmage Garrison in 1916.The lecture takes place on Wednesday in Liberty Hall, Dublin, at 8pm.
Sentence is implemented
Jailed murderer Brian McBarron had a two-year suspended sentence for assault reactivated at Wicklow Circuit Criminal Court yesterday.
In January McBarron, Wintergarden Apartments, Pearse Street, Dublin received a mandatory life sentence in the Central Criminal Court for the murder of his girlfriend Sara Neligan, daughter of prominent heart surgeon Maurice Neligan, in a knife attack between June 13-14th, 2007.
At Wicklow Circuit Court in 2005 he received a two-year sentence which was suspended with the defendant to pay €10,000 compensation to the injured party. Yesterday judge Michael O’Shea said the evidence was that the defendant was in breach of his bond.
Man questioned over cocaine
Gardaí in Cork were last night continuing to question a 35-year-old man about a €280,000 drugs seizure after they arrested him following a pursuit of a motorbike on the southside of the city on Thursday.
The man, who is originally from Limerick but has been living in Cork city, was arrested in the Barrack Street area after he was pursued by gardaí when he failed to stop in Togher and gardaí recovered four kilos of cocaine from a rucksack.
A 14-year-old boy who was travelling as a pillion passenger on the motorbike was also arrested but was released later and a file will now be prepared in relation to him for the DPP.
Rapper for Cork
American rapper Kanye West has been added the line-up for this year’s Live in the Marquee series in Cork. Other stars in the bill include James Taylor, Rod Stewart, Josh Ritter, Anastacia, and Gilbert O’Sullivan.
